A season of gratitude, growth, and giving ourselves a little grace. November has always felt like a natural time to slow down and reflect.
The year is beginning to wind down. The holidays are approaching. Our calendars are filling with family gatherings, traditions, and celebrations. And somewhere between the changing seasons and preparing for everything ahead, we’re reminded to appreciate what we have.
We think about the people we love, the memories we’ve made, and the little things that make life meaningful.
But how often do we stop to appreciate ourselves?
More specifically, how often do we appreciate the skin we live in every single day?
As someone who has spent years working in dermatology and aesthetic medicine, I’ve had countless conversations with patients about the things they wish they could change about their skin.
The fine lines they notice in photographs. The pigmentation that seems to appear overnight. The texture that wasn’t there a few years ago. The changes that come with aging, hormones, stress, and simply living life.
And while I absolutely understand wanting to improve those things, I also think there’s something important we sometimes forget.
Our skin deserves appreciation, not just correction.
This November, I want to shift the conversation toward gratitude. Not just gratitude for healthy skin, but for the progress we’ve made, the routines we’ve committed to, and the opportunity to continue caring for ourselves as we grow older.
Because taking care of your skin should never come from a place of feeling like you’re not enough.
It should come from recognizing that you’re worth taking care of.
Learning to Appreciate the Progress
Not every change has to be dramatic to be meaningful.
One of my favorite parts of what I do is watching patients recognize changes in their skin that they may not have noticed themselves.
Sometimes it’s a visible improvement in pigmentation or texture. Other times, it’s something much simpler.
Their skin feels more comfortable. They’re wearing less makeup. They’re no longer experiencing the same irritation or breakouts. Or maybe they’ve finally found a skincare routine they genuinely enjoy and can maintain.
Those moments matter to me just as much as the dramatic before-and-after photographs.
Because healthy skin isn’t always about a transformation.
Sometimes it’s about progress that happens so gradually we forget where we started.
And I think that applies to so many areas of life, doesn’t it?
We become so focused on what comes next that we forget to appreciate how far we’ve already come.
If you’ve spent this year working toward healthier skin, take a moment to recognize those efforts.
Maybe you started wearing sunscreen consistently. Maybe you committed to a treatment series, invested in better skincare, or finally stopped experimenting with every trending product on social media.
Even if your skin isn’t exactly where you’d like it to be, those choices are worth celebrating.
Progress is still progress, even when it happens quietly.
The Beauty of Consistency
The little things really do add up.
If there’s one thing I wish every patient understood about skin health, it’s that consistency will almost always matter more than chasing the next big thing.
And I know that’s not always the most exciting advice.
We love new products, innovative treatments, and the idea of seeing immediate results. But some of the most meaningful improvements in skin health happen through ordinary habits repeated over time.
Washing your face before bed. Applying sunscreen every morning. Using your skincare products consistently. Following through with recommended treatments and allowing your skin the time it needs to respond.
None of those things sound particularly glamorous.
But they matter.
Our skin is constantly changing. It responds to our environment, our hormones, our lifestyle, and the natural aging process. And while professional treatments can help address specific concerns, what we do between appointments is equally important.
I often remind patients that we aren’t simply treating the skin they have today.
We’re also making decisions that can influence how their skin looks and feels in the years ahead.
And that doesn’t mean you need a complicated routine or a bathroom counter overflowing with products.
Sometimes the best thing you can do for your skin is simplify, remain consistent, and stop feeling like you need to do more.
Protecting What You’ve Worked For
Your skincare journey doesn’t end when your treatment does.
Something I talk about frequently at XO Aesthetics is the importance of maintenance.
And I don’t mean that everyone needs to be in the treatment chair every month.
Quite the opposite.
My goal has always been to help patients make informed decisions about their skin, including understanding when a treatment is beneficial and when it may not be necessary.
Whether you’ve invested in MOXI, BBL, microneedling, Sculptra, injectables, or a personalized skincare regimen, the results you achieve deserve thoughtful care.
Our skin doesn’t stop aging after a treatment. Sun exposure continues to influence pigmentation and collagen breakdown. Hormonal changes can affect texture, hydration, and elasticity. And the natural aging process continues, regardless of how diligent we are.
That’s why I encourage patients to think about skin health as a long-term relationship rather than a series of isolated appointments.
For some, that means periodic treatments to maintain improvements. For others, it may simply mean adjusting their home routine as their skin changes.
There is no perfect schedule that works for everyone.
And there certainly isn’t a requirement to do everything.
A thoughtful treatment plan should fit your skin, your goals, your lifestyle, and your budget.
Because maintaining your results isn’t about constantly doing more.
It’s about continuing to care for what you’ve already worked so hard to achieve.
Giving Your Skin a Little Grace
Because life happens, and that’s okay.
November also brings the beginning of a very busy season.
Holiday gatherings, school activities, family traditions, shopping lists, and the seemingly endless number of things we try to squeeze into the final weeks of the year.
And here in Michigan, we can add colder temperatures, dry indoor air, and significantly less sunshine to the mix.
It’s not unusual for our skin to feel a little different this time of year.
You may notice increased dryness, sensitivity, or changes in how your usual skincare products feel. Your skin may benefit from additional moisture, a gentler approach to exfoliation, or adjustments to your routine.
But I also want to remind you of something.
You don’t have to do everything perfectly.
If you miss an evening of skincare because you’re exhausted, it’s okay. If you haven’t scheduled the treatment you’ve been thinking about, that’s okay, too.
One imperfect day doesn’t erase months of consistency.
And taking care of yourself shouldn’t become another source of pressure during an already busy season.
I want patients to enjoy their lives.
Eat the Thanksgiving dinner. Make the memories. Stay up a little too late laughing with family. Enjoy the holiday traditions that make this time of year special.
Then return to the habits that help you feel your best.
Your skincare routine should support your life, not control it.
Aging Is a Privilege. Caring for Yourself Is a Choice.
Let’s change the way we talk about getting older.
One of the things I’ve become increasingly passionate about throughout my career is helping patients feel more comfortable with the idea of aging.
Not because we have to love every change we see in the mirror.
But because getting older shouldn’t automatically mean feeling less beautiful, less confident, or less like ourselves.
There is a difference between wanting to care for your appearance and feeling like you need to fight every sign of aging.
And I think that distinction matters.
I love what aesthetic medicine allows us to do. I love helping patients soften lines that bother them, improve skin quality, address sun damage, and feel more confident when they look in the mirror.
But I never want someone sitting in my treatment chair to feel like their value is tied to how young they look.
Our faces are supposed to change.
They reflect the years we’ve lived, the experiences we’ve had, and the expressions we’ve shared with the people we love.
And while we can absolutely make thoughtful choices to support our skin along the way, we don’t need to erase every indication that we’ve lived.
To me, aging beautifully isn’t about looking twenty-five forever.
It’s about caring for yourself in a way that allows you to feel healthy, confident, and comfortable in your own skin.
At forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, and beyond.
Because growing older is something to be grateful for, not something we should be ashamed of.
A Personal Note of Gratitude
From my heart to our XO Community.
As we approach Thanksgiving, I want to take a moment to express something that doesn’t always fit into a treatment appointment or a social media post.
Thank you.
Thank you for trusting me with your skin, your concerns, and your confidence.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey, whether you’ve been coming to XO Aesthetics for years or recently walked through our doors for the first time.
I know there are many places you can choose for aesthetic treatments and skincare, and I never take it for granted when you choose us.
Owning a small business comes with so many responsibilities, but it also comes with the privilege of building genuine relationships with the people who support it.
I get to celebrate your milestones, hear about your families, share in your exciting moments, and sometimes offer a listening ear during life’s more challenging seasons.
Those relationships mean more to me than you may realize.
And when I think about everything I’m grateful for this year, our XO Community is certainly part of that list.
You allow me to continue doing work that I love, growing a business I believe in, and helping people feel more confident in themselves.
That is something I will never stop appreciating.
Here’s to the Skin We’re In
As we move through November and toward another new year, I hope you’ll take a moment to appreciate yourself.
Not just the things you’ve accomplished or the goals you’ve reached.
But the person you are today.
Appreciate the skin that has carried you through another year. The progress you’ve made. The lessons you’ve learned. And even the changes you’re still learning to embrace.
Continue investing in your health. Protect the results you’ve worked for. Make thoughtful choices about your skincare and treatments.
But remember to enjoy the life you’re living along the way.
Because beautiful skin has never been about perfection.
It’s about feeling confident, caring for yourself, and recognizing that every stage of life deserves to be celebrated.
Here’s to healthy skin, meaningful progress, and growing older with gratitude.
